Terrance Guardipee is an internationally acclaimed Blackfeet painter and ledger artist, consistently recognized for the traditional depiction of his Blackfeet heritage and contemporary innovation demonstrated in his work. Terrance was one of the first Native artists to revive the historical ledger art tradition, and was the first ledger artist to transform the style from the single page custom into his signature map collage concept. The leading institutions in the Native art community consistently acknowledge Terrance’s innovative incorporation of authentic Blackfeet images into his own contemporary form of ledger art.

Institute of American Indian Arts 1993 – 1995

The Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) is the only four-year fine arts degree institution in the nation devoted to contemporary Native American arts. Terrance studied two-dimensional arts within the discipline of studio arts.

Philanthropy

Willamette University Native American Advisory Council 2006 – Present

The Native American Advisory Council is composed of statewide native leaders, Willamette Native alumni, and Willamette Native students. The Council was formed in 2006 to advise Willamette on its work with and service to Native American communities.

Seattle University American Indian Law Journal

In support of academic development in the area of Indian Law, Terrance donated an original map collage titled “The Spirit of Justice” to Seattle University School of Law’s American Indian Law Journal.

American Indian Film Festival Featured Artist: 2009, 2010

Terrance Guardipee was invited to produce the poster image for both the 2009 and 2010 American Indian Film Festival. For the 2009 poster image, Guardipee produced “Last Eagle,” and for the 2010 image he created “Black Horse Woman.”

50th Annual Heard Museum Trail of Painted Ponies Featured Artist: 2008

Terrance was selected to design, in collaboration with Catherine Black Horse, a Painted Pony image to support scholarship opportunities for Native youth. The Pony was sold at a benefit sponsored by the Heard Museum.

National Museum of the American Indian at the Smithsonian Institute: 2007

The National Museum of the American Indian at the Smithsonian Institute selected Terrance Guardipee as the museum’s featured artist in December of 2007.

Pasatiempo – Santa Fe New Mexican: Cover Artist: 2007

Terrance was the cover artist for the 2004 Santa Fe Indian Art Market edition of Pasatiempo magazine. The magazine also featured an article on Terrance by Craig Smith entitled “Hunting for Buried Ledgers.”
